Markku Luolajan-Mikkola

Markku Luolajan-Mikkola is one of Finland’s leading early music performers. He plays various instruments in the viol family as well as historic celli. His repertoire encompasses music from the 16th century up until today.
Luolajan-Mikkola has made many CD:s and a large portion of the material has been world premiere recordings. His solo albums have received awards such as the classical Emma (2007). Luolajan-Mikkola is a founding member of the renowned viol consort Phantasm.
In 2010, Luolajan-Mikkola founded the early music festival BRQ Vantaa, for which he continues being artistic director to this day. He has been teaching at the Sibelius Academy and other music institutions since 1976. In 2005–2015, he was an Honorary member of the senior common room at Oxford Magdalen College.
Luolajan-Mikkola studied at the Sibelius Academy, where he graduated on the modern cello in 1983. In 1992 he completed additional degrees both on the viol and the baroque cello at Royal Conservatory The Hague.
