Uljas Pulkkis

Uljas Pulkkis (b.1975) is a Helsinki-based Doctor of Composition (2023 Sibelius Academy) who specialises in composing orchestral works and operas. Pulkkis' music has been praised for its dramatic and melodic qualities.
Pulkkis has worked as a freelance artist for about 25 years, composing over 40 orchestral works, 7 operas, over 50 chamber music works, ballet, film music, etc. His most prominent performances in Finland have included, for example, the music for the orchestra the "Maamme" Symphony for the Radio Symphony Orchestra, which was performed on Finnair flights and on TV, and the Kekkonen opera, composed to a libretto by Lasse Lehtinen, which made the headlines in the evening papers. The most notable recent premiere is the opera "All the Truths We Cannot See" from 2022, which was featured in the daily newspapers, on MTV's main news programme and was also performed 5 times in Los Angeles.
Pulkkis has won numerous composition prizes for his compositions both at home and abroad. Among the most important prizes are 1st prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition for his piano concerto "Tears of Ludovico", and 1st prize at the Paris Composers' Rostrum for his violin concerto "Enchanted Garden". Other prizes include third place in the Gustav Mahler International Composition Competition.
Future works include a chamber opera about Ada Lovelace at the G-livelab in Helsinki in October 2024, and a grand opera "Isoviha" for the 50th anniversary of the Ilmajoki Music Festival on 6 June 2025.
