Viol player and cellist Maija Lampela studied early music with Markku Luolajan-Mikkola at the Sibelius Academy, specialising in the smallest member of the viola da gamba family, the pardessus de viole, in addition to the bass viol. Lampela has performed with many early music ensembles and orchestras at festivals such as Avanti Suvisoitto, Janakkala Baroque, Kajaani Barokki Soi, as well as with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, Kymi Sinfonietta and Pori Sinfonietta. She has given recital concerts on the pardessus de viole for instance in the Musicians of the King’s Road concert series in Turku and the BRQ Vantaa festival in 2019, as well as the Oulu Early Music Festival in 2023. Her own long term ensembles are Trio Barocco and the viol ensemble Jouhi, as well as the viol duo with Johanna Kilpijärvi. 

In addition to playing the viol, Maija is a researcher of swamps at the Geological Survey of Finland.
