Ilkka Hammo is a versatile composer, guitarist and teacher. His production as composer consists of orchestral, solo, chamber and vocal works.
Sinve 2019, Hammo’s career has been highlighted by premieres of new orchestral works, in addition to his chamber music. A successful debut with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra took place in 2019 with the work On the Horizon, and many new commissions have followed since. In 2022, new works were premiered by UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and Tampere Filharmonia. In January 2024, Tampere Filharmonia under the direction of Matthew Halls premiered Spring Flames to great ctitical acclaim, and in March the same year Hannu Lintu and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra premiered the likewise acclaimed work Maan roihu.
Ilkka Hammo produced his first composition concert, focused on guitar works, in Tampere, autumn 2022. Among his chamber music partners TampereRaw, Kaaos Ensemble, Tuuli Lindeberg, Petri Kumela and Andrzej Wilkus may be mentioned. Many festivals, among them Korsholm Music Festival, Time of Music Viitasaari, Tampere Biennale, New Music October and Tampering Festival, have featured his works. Hammo’s music has also been presented in Germany, France and Italy.
Ilkka Hammo studied the guitar and composition at the Sibelius Academy in 2002-2015, graduating with master’s degrees in both. His composition teachers were Tapio Nevanlinna, and Veli-Matti Puumala. Hammo teaches guitar and composition at the Pirkanmaa Music Institute.
