The 136 year old town hall with renowned history was designed by the Swedish architect Magnus Isaeus. In 1918, during the first months of Finland's independency, the town hall was an importantvenue.
All painting decorations from 1896, e.g. the 14 muses surrounding the concert hall ceiling, are adorned by the famous decorators of the contemporary Salomon Wuorio painting shop of Helsinki. The building is furnished with valuable art. The Steinway grand piano is the first ever registered grand piano in Finland dating from 1887. Jean Sibelius and Armas Järnefelt among others and many other celebrated international pianists have given recitals with this piano.
